MAGYAR (For English, click on the blue "more")
"Gyönyörű dal, az új kedvencem. A szerelem és az igazság mély gondolatai." - B. Sch.
"Egészen különleges hangzásvilág, valóban tetten érhetőek hagyományos magyar dallammotívumok, és mindez valami egészen klassz hangszereléssel párosítva. Finoman kiegészítik az itt-ott kellemes aláfestést nyújtó, máshol mintegy főmotívumként hallható népi hangszerek. A dallamhajlításoktól intonációtól eltekintve is szépen artikulált, jól érthető. Az angol fordítás is nagyon jó, gratulálok, összességében nagyon jól sikerült. Ötvözi a modernitást a tradícióval, igen szeretem. Kösz, hogy megosztottad. Továbbadtam én is, és másoknak, idegen ajkúaknak is tetszett, egy kis szelet az "archaikus"Magyarországból, XXI századi köntösben." - Orbán Tamás

ENGLISH
Old traditional songs are always fresh and alive when Andrea Gerak sings them, and here is one excellent example of that.
Yet another version of the delicate Hungarian folk melody from Transylvania (Szerelem, Szerelem), which was featured in the movie The English Patient.
Two composers have already got inspired by Andrea Gerak's acapella recording of the song and arranged it into a modern tune, and now so did Swedish sound magician Ulf Olofsson (Warewhulf).
What the listeners say about this new rendition:
"Real nice one, very Enigma!" - B.A.
"Beautiful song and is my new favorite. Some deep thoughts of love and truth." - B. Sch.
"A very special sound, one can indeed catch the traditional Hungarian motives, and all this coupled with some really cool arrangement. Traditional instruments complement it in a fine way, giving the song a pleasant background at certain points, at other instances they provide kind of a hook line. Regardless of the embellishments and intonation, the lyrics are nicely articulated, well understandable. The English translation is also very good, congratulations, very well done. This track combines modernity with tradition, I like it a lot. Thank you for sharing. I also shared it and others liked it too, including foreigners. A small piece of "archaic" Hungary, in a 21st century dress." - Thomas Orban

SZÖVEG
(ORIGINAL HUNGARIAN TEXT,
ENGLISH TRANSLATION BELOW)
Nincsen a világon nagyobb szomorúság,
Mint kik összepárosodnak, s nem szeretik egymást,
Ha meg kell ölelje, karjait fájlalja,
Ha meg kell csókolja, bús könnyit hullatja.
Szeretlek, szeretlek, csak ne mondd senkinek,
Míg a templom földjén fektetve nem visznek,
Ne mondd meg anyádnak, hogy szeretlek téged,
Ne tudja meg senki, majd' meghalok érted.
Szerelem, szerelem, átkozott gyötrelem,
Mért nem virágoztál minden fa levelén,
Minden fa levelén, minden bokor alján,
Hogy szakisztott vóna rólad minden legény s lejány.
Mer' én szakisztottam, el is szalasztottam,
Szelíd galamb helyett vadgalambot fogtam,
Hej, de még szakisztanék, ha jóra találnék,
Ha jóra, ha szépre, régi szeret?mre.
Hej, de régi szeret?mért mit nem cselekedném,
Tengerb?l a vizet kanállal kimerném,
Tenger fenekér?l aprógyöngyöt szednék,
Abból a rózsámnak gyöngykoszorút kötnék.
(ENGLISH TRANSLATION)
There is no greater sadness in the world
Than when those get coupled who don't love each other,
If she has to hug him, she says her arms hurt,
If she has to kiss him, she sheds tears.
I love you, I love you, but tell it to no-one
Till they carry me laid out on the church's ground.
Don't tell it to your mother that I love you,
No-one should know that I'm dying for you.
Love, love, wretched anguish
Why didn't you blossom on the leaves of each tree
On the leaves of each tree, at the bottom of each bush,
So that every boy and girl could pick from you.
'Cause I've already picked one, but let him go,
Instead of a tame dove, I caught a wild one,
I would pick one again if I found a good one,
If a good one, if a nice one, my old flame.
What wouldn't I do for my old flame,
I would scoop the water out of the sea with a spoon,
From the sea bottom I would pick tiny pearls,
For my old flame I would bind a pearl-wreath.
